Coding with Codex just became a little more playful. OpenAI has introduced AI-generated pet companions to its Codex app, the company’s coding-focused agent tool. These animated companions are designed as optional overlays that float on screen and keep users updated on what Codex is doing.
While the pets don’t write code themselves, they act as visual assistants. They can show the current task Codex is working on, alert users when a task is finished, and let them know when input or feedback is needed. This makes it easier for developers to follow Codex’s progress without leaving the app they are currently using.
To enable or remove a companion, users can enter the “/pet” command inside Codex. OpenAI includes eight preset pets, but users also have the option to create their own AI-generated companion with the “/hatch” command. One example is a goblin-style pet, and early users have already started sharing a variety of custom creations — including a few inspired by Microsoft’s classic Clippy assistant.
The new pet feature is now available in Codex for both Windows and macOS. OpenAI is also running a limited-time promotion, offering 30 days of ChatGPT Pro to the creators of 10 of its favorite user-generated companions.
